Full Description:

17th-century German stove tile showing St Thomas holding a book and a spear, the instrument of his martyrdom.  He is said to have founded seven churches in India, where he died, which explains the number 7 to the right of his head.

Above him are two angels in spandrels, two caryatids form the sides of the arch, and beneath him is the legend: S. Thomas.

The glaze colour is unusual for a whole tile, possibly a very dark manganese or a black.

Some losses to the glaze and a crack to each side through the caryatid.
