Carved Oak Panel of The Fortune Teller, Dutch c.1690.  An old woman is reading the hand of a lady seated on a stool while her pet dog sleeps at her feet.  Behind her, leaning on the stool, is a boy holding a purse, which he has just cut from her belt while her attention is focused on the fortune teller.

This subject is found notably in 17th-century Dutch and French genre paintings, showing fortune tellers, card sharps and procuresses working in conjunction with thieves.  This carving is probably copied from a print taken from one such painting.

The scene takes place in a room set within a decorative border, surmounted by a shell and two bearded heads crowned with leaves.

The carving has been framed to be used as a door panel.  The gaps left when the lock and hinges were removed have been repaired.
