Full Description:

15th-century oak panel of The Nativity, Northern French c.1470.

The Virgin and Joseph kneel before the Christ Child moments after the birth, while two saints stand outside the stable.  Unusually, the scene shows God the Father above the scene, one hand raised in blessing, the other holding an orb surmounted by a large cross foretelling Christ's crucifixion.  He is flanked by two angels.  God is between the two gables of the stable whose triangular shape recalls The Trinity.  The ox and the ass do not feature in this version.

Originally the centre panel of a Gothic coffer.

Old worm damage and wear, but a very unusual and early panel.
