Drinkers

This comical pierced oak panel shows two Flemish countrymen drinking from the same bottle by means of a tube, their eyes blank with concentration or inebriation.  The motif seems to be a mocking reference to the more sophisticated Renaissance design of two elegant, long-billed birds drinking from the same vase.

The two men are wearing hats of the 1560s-70s and are reminiscent of characters in Breugel paintings.  Both hats can be found in Peasant Dance c.1567.
