The Last Judgement

Late medieval or 16th-century Spanish walnut panel of The Last Judgement.  The central figure of Christ, resting both feet on the globe, is flanked by two apostles.  They are shown in the clouds in a blaze of glory while they reward or punish the living and the dead; Christ described this as sorting the sheep from the goats: the compassionate sheep will find salvation, the hard-hearted goats, meanwhile, get sent to damnation.

This unusual panel retains extensive remains of original polychrome decoration, a couple of flowerheads still visible on the borders.

The left side of Christ's face has been partially worn away, probably from the touch of devotional fingers.
